The Texas Association of Future Educators (TAFE) at Hastings is a student organization dedicated to preparing students for careers in teaching and other education-related fields. Under the guidance of education and training instructor and TAFE sponsor Tracy Shakes, members gain hands-on experiences through classroom internships, lesson planning, competitions, and professional development sessions that simulate real teaching situations.
This year, the club’s mission focuses on achieving great things while having fun, creating memorable moments, and reaching success together. “I joined because I have always loved working with kids, and I wanted a place where I could learn about teaching while also building leadership skills,” said Dayanna Aguilar Rivera, Hastings TAFE Vice President and Secretary.
TAFE members also cherish the bonds they form through club activities. Sofia Nguyen, President of Hastings TAFE, shared, “My favorite memory in the club so far has been hand wrapping over 200 chocolates for Teacher Appreciation Day because, though it required extra effort, we had fun and bonded as a community.”
The club has actively participated in events that give back to the school and local community. Students attended the Texas Association of Future Educators (TAFE) Area 4 Conference at Lone Star College on September 19th, where they engaged in professional development sessions and were inspired to grow as future educators. Additionally, Hastings Tiny Bears Care, a childcare service for staff during Open House on September 23rd, gave students an opportunity to support their school community in a meaningful way.
TAFE has helped students grow personally and academically. “Being surrounded by people who are willing to serve and learn has improved my ability to shine much more, whether in school or in life,” explained Dayanna. Members also develop teamwork, leadership, patience, and communication skills—skills that are invaluable in the classroom and beyond.
The club celebrates achievements in TAFE competitions, with some members advancing to the National qualifying level. Despite challenges, Tracy Shakes encouraged students to remain confident and maintain a positive attitude, reminding them to continually seek success. “One standout moment was when our sponsor encouraged us to approach situations with confidence and positivity,” said Sofia.
Students interested in joining can attend monthly meetings, speak with Tracy Shakes, or join service projects. “The year does pass by quickly, so be an active member and join all of our events!” advised Dayanna.
For members, TAFE represents more than just a club. “Being a part of TAFE means being given opportunities and having a supportive community,” said Sofia. In three words, the experience can be summed up as community, supportive, and encouraging.
With so many events already completed and the continued support of their new principal, Dr. William Price, the Hastings TAFE program is fostering a positive, collaborative environment while shaping the next generation of educators.
