Alief Independent School District proudly announces its 2025 District Teachers of the Year, celebrating two remarkable educators whose passion, dedication, and belief in their students continue to shape the future of education. This annual recognition honors not only individual excellence but also the vital role teachers play in empowering students, supporting families, and strengthening communities.

Teachers are more than instructorsโ€”they are mentors, advocates, and leaders who help young people discover who they are and who they can become. They ignite curiosity, build confidence, and provide the guidance and care that every student deserves. In classrooms across Alief ISD, teachers are laying the foundation for brighter futures, one lesson and one life at a time.

At the secondary level, Sherita Harmon has been named the Alief ISD Secondary Teacher of the Year. Known for her deep connection to students and her transformational classroom environment, Harmon sees her work as a mission of purpose and compassion. โ€œBeing named the Alief ISD Secondary Teacher of the Year is an incredible honor that reflects the love, purpose, and passion I pour into my students and work every single day,โ€ she shared. โ€œThis recognition isnโ€™t just for me, but it is for every student who has ever felt unseen, every classroom transformed into a safe space, and every dream weโ€™ve nurtured together.โ€

Harmon is driven by the belief that one caring adult can change the trajectory of a studentโ€™s life. โ€œWhat inspires me to keep going is knowing that education has the power to change lives. All it takes is one person to care enough to make a difference, and Iโ€™m forever committed to being that light, that guide, and that advocate for every student who walks through my door,โ€ she said. For Harmon, this honor is not the end, but a call to keep showing up and serving with intention. โ€œRepresenting Alief in this capacity is more than just an awardโ€”it is a responsibility and a celebration of the students and colleagues who have played a part in my journey along the way. I am proud to be aligned to a district that pours into its people. I have been able to learn, grow, and do so much.โ€ Her personal motto, โ€œIf not me, then who,โ€ captures her commitment to being the difference-maker students need.

At the elementary level, Paula Pineda has been named Alief ISD Elementary Teacher of the Year, praised for her ability to connect deeply with students and foster a joyful, resilient learning culture. โ€œBeing named Alief District Teacher of the Year is a moment my students and I will never forget,โ€ said Pineda. โ€œIt encourages them to work hard for their dreams and remember these words: in life, everything is possible.โ€

Pineda's classroom is filled with inspiration and hopeโ€”a reflection of her belief that every child has greatness within them. โ€œThis honor is deeply meaningful to me because I want to continue to inspire students to believe in themselves, love what they do, and pursue their passions because that is how we make a difference in the world,โ€ she said. โ€œI am proud and ready to represent this incredible district we are fortunate to be a part of.โ€

Reflecting on the district's legacy, Molly Ness, who was named Secondary Teacher of the Year in 1997, remembered the honor of her own journey: โ€œI was honored for advancing to region to represent Alief ISD.โ€ Her continued involvement and pride in Alief speak to the districtโ€™s enduring tradition of nurturing educators who leave lasting legacies.

โ€œAs Deputy Superintendent of Human Resources and Professional Learning, I am continually inspired by the unwavering commitment, passion, and love our Teachers of the Year bring to their work.โ€™, said Dr. Elizabeth Veloz-Powell. โ€œIn a district as richly diverse as ours, their ability to embrace that uniqueness and meet the needs of every child is nothing short of extraordinary. They are not only educatorsโ€”they are champions of equity, belonging, and hope for every student in Alief.โ€

We thank each and every teacher for the love, energy, and care they bring to their classrooms. They are the heart of our schools and the backbone of our community. Their work goes far beyond lesson plansโ€”it shapes identities, builds futures, and uplifts generations. While we honor our Teachers of the Year, we also celebrate all Alief educators, every day. Thank you for supporting our students, families, and neighborhoods with support and dedication. Your impact is immeasurable, and your contributions are deeply valued.
