Thinking of Retiring?!

We’ve prepared a checklist especially for you, with essential information on retirement planning, insurance plans, and other resources available to Alief ISD retirees.

This checklist focuses on Alief ISD retirement-related steps; Teachers Retirement System of Texas (TRS) requirements are noted where applicable.

Retirement Checklist for Alief ISD Employees

Approximately Six Months Before Your Anticipated Retirement Date

Upon Receipt of Your TRS Retirement Packet

  • Carefully review your TRS retirement estimate and packet.

    • If you identify any discrepancies, contact TRS immediately.

  • Submit required birth records to TRS for yourself and, if applicable, your beneficiary (Options 1, 2, or 5).

    • Write your Social Security number on each birth record so TRS can match documents to your account.

    • If your current name differs from your birth certificate name, clearly write your current name on the document.

  • Complete and return all documents included in your TRS packet, following TRS instructions carefully.

Separating from Alief ISD

  • Terminate your employment with Alief ISD by completing the Resignation/Separation Form (link).

  • After HR receives your TRS retirement letter:

    • Human Resources will send you an Exit Interview.

    • Risk Management will send an Insurance Notice.

    • Complete and return all required forms promptly.

Insurance & Leave Payouts

  • Risk Management will contact you regarding:

    • Retiree Insurance

    • Local Leave Deferral Plan

  • Follow all instructions in the packet and submit required documentation by stated deadlines.

Payroll & Final Verification

  • TRS will coordinate directly with Alief ISD Payroll to verify final compensation information.

    • No action is required from the retiree.

Final Recommendation

  • We strongly recommend retirees review and verify all information received from:

    • TRS

    • Human Resources Dept.

    • Risk Management Dept.

This ensures accurate retirement benefits, timely insurance enrollment, and a smooth transition into retirement.
