Elsik High School student representatives recently had the remarkable opportunity to join district leaders from across the region in a collaborative discussion focused on strengthening College, Career, and Military Readiness (CCMR), improving advising structures, and expanding meaningful supports within Career and Technical Education (CTE) pathways. This convening, hosted in partnership with the Gates Foundation, provided a platform where student voicesβoften the most insightful yet least heardβwere placed at the center of conversations shaping their futures.
During the session, Elsik students shared thoughtful reflections grounded in their lived experiences navigating course selection, postsecondary planning, and career exploration. They spoke candidly about the challenges many students face, including balancing academic expectations with personal responsibilities, understanding complex graduation and endorsement requirements, and accessing consistent guidance when planning for life after high school. Their perspectives highlighted the importance of clear communication, early exposure to pathway options, and stronger connections between classroom learning and real-world opportunities.
The representatives also emphasized the value of supportive adultsβadvisors, teachers, and counselorsβwho take time to build relationships and provide individualized guidance. Their stories reinforced the idea that effective advising is not a one-time interaction, but an ongoing partnership that helps students make informed, confident decisions about their futures.
District leaders expressed appreciation for the honesty and depth of the studentsβ contributions, noting that their insights would directly inform future improvements in CCMR strategy, advising frameworks, and alignment of CTE programs with student interests and industry needs. The Gates Foundation team also commended the students for their leadership and their ability to articulate both successes and opportunities for growth within the current system.
Overall, the event served as a powerful reminder that students are essential partners in educational design. Elsik High Schoolβs representatives demonstrated exceptional poise, clarity, and purposeβensuring their experiences will help shape stronger, more studentβcentered supports for years to come.
