Tamieka Thomas is a proud product of Alief ISD, where her journey from student to educator has come full circle. She grew up in the Alief community, attending Chambers Elementary, Ollie Middle School in sixth grade, and Alief Middle Schoolβwhere she now has the privilege of teaching 7th and 8th grade students βall things AVID,β preparing them for college, career, and success in a global society. She graduated early from Hastings High School in 1998, carrying with her the values and lessons instilled throughout her years in the district.
One of Thomasβs fondest memories of her time in Alief ISD is the strong sense of community and diversity that shaped her worldview. Surrounded by classmates from diverse cultural backgrounds, she developed a profound appreciation for different perspectives, traditions, and experiencesβinsights that continue to inform her both personally and professionally.
Her decision to pursue education was deeply influenced by the teachers and mentors who believed in her. Their encouragement planted a seed of purpose, inspiring her to become that same source of belief and motivation for others. Today, Thomas serves as the AVID Site Coordinator, AVID Elective Teacher, and Electives Team Leader at Alief Middle School. She also mentors students and colleagues, drawing on her leadership experience to strengthen campus culture.
βWhat I enjoy most is empowering students to see themselves as college and career-ready leaders,β Thomas said. βWatching them gain confidence, set goals, and recognize their own ability to create success stories is the most rewarding part of my work.β
Thomas credits her time in Alief ISD with teaching her resilience, adaptability, and the value of embracing diversity. Those lessons have shaped her not only as an educator and leader but also as a mentor, business owner, and lifelong learner. Alongside her husband, she co-owns two family businessesβTop Notch Katering Services and Top Notch Electric Servicesβventures that allow her to continue serving others in new ways. She also pursues her passion for writing, motivational speaking, and mentoring through projects like her book βStill Standingβ and her blog, βBrown Girls Blog 2β, which inspires women and families to live with faith, purpose, and resilience.
Her impact extends beyond her classroom. As an AVID Site Coordinator, she leads initiatives that build college and career readiness across campus, supports colleagues in implementing AVID strategies, and contributes to district-level AVID programs. For Thomas, this work is personal. βGiving back means ensuring that students today see the same opportunities, inspiration, and support that I once received,β she shared.
Outside of her career and entrepreneurial pursuits, Thomas values fitness, family time, and mentoring. She is most proud of being a first-generation college graduate, serving in leadership roles within Alief ISD, and building thriving businesses with her husband. Above all, she is proud of her three sonsβBrian Cameron, Shawn Jr., and Bryceβand of the students she has inspired to pursue their dreams.
Reflecting on her journey, Thomas defines success as βwalking in your God-given purpose while positively impacting others.β She credits Alief ISD with laying the foundation for her values and career path, shaping her into the leader she is today.
To current students, staff, and alumni, Thomas shares this message:
βTo students: Believe in yourself and never let your current circumstances define your future.
To staff: Your influence lasts far beyond the classroomβkeep inspiring.
To alumni: Stay connected and continue giving back, because our stories show the world that greatness grows out of Alief ISD.β
