Richard Buckley is a remarkable example of courage, perseverance, and the power of a positive attitude. Before moving to Olle Middle School, Richard earned statewide recognition in Mississippi for his exceptional talent as a poet, placing second in a poetry competition that included elementary school students from across the state, both sighted and visually impaired.
His achievement is especially meaningful because Richard uses poetry as a way to express the world through his imagination, emotions, and experiences. His winning poem earned him recognition as a published author, with his work included in libraries throughout Mississippi. More than an academic accomplishment, the recognition celebrates his willingness to share his voice and demonstrate that challenges do not define a person's abilities.
Richard's journey is one of extraordinary resilience. After losing his vision, he faced significant medical challenges. His medical team once predicted that he might never walk or speak again. However, Richard defied those expectations. Today, he navigates daily life without sight, runs while reciting his daily affirmations, and approaches each new challenge with determination and optimism.
His perseverance was evident during his recovery in the pediatric intensive care unit. When his physical therapist encouraged him to take a few steps using a walker, Richard pushed himself far beyond the original goal. Instead of walking just a few feet, he made his way across the entire pediatric ICU floor. His accomplishment brought the medical team, family, and everyone watching to tears and cheers of encouragement.
Throughout his journey, Richard has also demonstrated an extraordinary ability to bring joy to others. While receiving chemotherapy at the Children's Cancer Clinic, he regularly walked through the unit performing his Mickey Mouse impression for young patients. Even while undergoing treatment himself, he made it a priority to brighten other children's days and give them moments of happiness during difficult times.
His determination extends beyond his personal achievements. Richard was inducted into the National Honor Society after returning to school following a year and a half away while battling cancer. Rather than simply catching up, he excelled academically and demonstrated the same perseverance that defines every aspect of his life.
Richard's faith, optimism, and belief that hard work and prayer bring blessings guide his outlook. He embraces the silver lining in every situation, welcomes challenges, and enjoys exceeding expectations. An avid Beyblade enthusiast, he especially appreciates celebrating his accomplishments with new additions to his favorite collection!
Looking toward the future, Richard hopes to attend college, study social work, and become an advocate for children affected by childhood cancer and disabilities. His goal is to help others recognize their potential by focusing on what they are able to accomplish rather than the limitations others may see.
Richard's story reminds us that resilience is not simply about overcoming obstacles; it is about finding joy, lifting others, and continuing to shine along the way.
My Love for Leaves
By Richard Buckley
I like leaves, just in a different way than before,
Their soft velvet top is smooth and cool to my hands.
I especially like it when leaves are sharp and rough with holes.
Sometimes they are crunchy and fall apart in my fingers.
I can rip off little pieces to create triangle shapes.
In the past, I would pick up colorful leaves off the ground and blow them as if I was the wind.
Now, I can’t hear them as easily because they are soft under my feet, so I am not sure when they are around.
When I’m sitting outside on the ground, I feel around until my fingers come across them.
I feel their familiar pointy ends and hold them close to hear them crunch between my fingers once again.
Nowadays, I experience the leaves different than before.
The cancer took away the colors of fall, and the chemo took away the volume of their crunch.
But nothing can take away my love for leaves.
