Tj Baker, a dedicated substitute educator with the Alief Independent School District, has been recognized as a Literature Elegist of Harris County for her contributions to literature, journalism, culture, and the community. “I don’t believe in doing anything halfway. I bring my voice to the page, my heart to the community, my wisdom to the classroom, and my purpose to every room I enter”, says Ms. Tj Baker, Literature Elegist. MSL, BFA. “From receiving, thus far two proclamations recognizing my contributions to literature, culture, and community, to writing poetry and stories for the late Queen of Wales”, Baker added.
Baker’s commitment to education and communication is grounded in an impressive academic background. She earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Communication and Theater from Texas Southern University in 1993 and later earned a Master of Science in Leadership from Grand Canyon University in 2011. Her education and professional experiences have helped shape her passion for storytelling, leadership, and community engagement.
In addition to her work in education, Baker is a prominent journalist and regular contributor to African-American News and Issues, a publication recognized as one of the largest Black-perspective newspapers in Texas, with a statewide circulation of more than 300,000. Through her writing, Baker explores a variety of topics, including cultural affairs, politics, local Houston events, and social justice.
Her journalism reflects a commitment to amplifying stories and perspectives that are important to the African American community. Through thoughtful reporting and commentary, Baker helps highlight issues affecting families and communities while promoting civic engagement, empowerment, and awareness of history and culture.
African-American News and Issues was founded in 1996 by Roy and Sherly Malonson and is headquartered in Houston's Acres Homes community. The publication focuses on communities with significant African American populations, providing readers with news and information centered on empowerment, civic participation, and historical awareness.
Baker brings that same spirit of service to her role with Alief ISD. As a substitute educator, she plays an important role in supporting students and campuses across the district. Her work in the classroom, combined with her experience as a journalist, reflects her dedication to education, communication, and community service.
Her recognition as a Literature Elegist of Harris County celebrates not only her accomplishments as a writer but also the impact of her voice and continued commitment to preserving stories, sharing knowledge, and inspiring others.
Baker’s work as an educator and journalist demonstrates the powerful connection between education, storytelling, and community service. “I have learned that every platform is an opportunity to leave something meaningful behind”, shared Tj. “If my name is attached to the work, I want the work to speak for itself... And speak well!” she added.
