Alief ISD proudly celebrates Kerr High School student Katlyn Khuu for being named a 2026 National ARTEFFECT Finalist, an outstanding honor recognizing her exceptional artistic talent, historical research, and storytelling. Katlyn was selected from a highly competitive pool of submissions from students around the world.

Katlyn's colored pencil drawing, A Heart to Another, honors the groundbreaking work of pioneering pediatric cardiologist Dr. Helen Taussig, whose innovations transformed the treatment of children with congenital heart defects. Through her artwork, Katlyn beautifully captures Dr. Taussig's compassion, perseverance, and lasting impact on medicine, while illustrating how one person's dedication can change countless lives.

The national ARTEFFECT competition challenges students to uncover the stories of heroes who have made a positive impact on the world. Participants conduct extensive historical research and create original works of art that bring these inspiring individuals to life. Katlyn's submission stood out for its artistic excellence, thoughtful interpretation, and powerful storytelling.

Adding to this prestigious recognition, Katlyn's artwork is also featured on the Lowell Milken Center for Unsung Heroes website, where visitors can learn more about her artistic process and the historical significance of Dr. Taussig's work.

Katlyn credits much of her success to the encouragement and guidance of her art teacher, Dr. Keri Reynolds, whose mentorship inspired and supported her throughout the creative process. Dr. Reynolds encouraged Katlyn to dig deeper into her research, refine her artistic vision, and confidently tell the story of an extraordinary woman whose contributions continue to save lives today. Her dedication to nurturing student creativity and excellence played an important role in helping Katlyn achieve national recognition.

Katlyn's achievement reflects the exceptional opportunities for academic and artistic excellence available at Kerr High School and throughout Alief ISD. It also highlights the meaningful impact that dedicated educators like Dr. Keri Reynolds have in helping students discover their talents, think critically, and connect history with creativity.

Alief ISD congratulates Katlyn Khuu on this remarkable national accomplishment and extends its appreciation to Dr. Keri Reynolds for her commitment to inspiring the next generation of artists and scholars. Together, they exemplify the excellence, innovation, and passion for learning that define the Alief ISD community.
