For David Unaegbu, leadership is rooted in service, advocacy, and creating meaningful change. As a senior at Elsik High School and a member of the Superintendent Student Advisory Council, David is committed to ensuring student voices are heard in conversations that shape the future of the district.
David, who is actively involved in numerous organizations, has dedicated much of his work to civic engagement, student advocacy, and community service. His decision to join the Superintendent Student Advisory Council came from a desire to expand that work by connecting student perspectives directly with district leadership. “I’ve spent years organizing events, leading initiatives, and listening to students,” David shared. “I saw this as an opportunity to bring those perspectives into conversations where real decisions are being made.”
To David, serving on the council represents more than personal achievement—it represents responsibility. He believes leadership is not only about speaking up, but also about listening carefully, understanding the needs of others, and following through with action. “Being a member of the council means responsibility,” he said. “It’s not just about representing myself, but about representing students who may not always feel heard.”
Through the council, David believes students play a critical role in the district’s decision-making process. By sharing real experiences, concerns, and ideas from campuses across Alief ISD, council members help district leaders better understand the challenges and opportunities students face every day.
“The council creates a direct line of communication between students and district leadership,” David explained. “We help ensure that decisions reflect what students are actually going through, not just what is assumed.” One area the council has recently focused on is improving student experience and engagement. Discussions have included ways to better support students academically and emotionally, as well as strategies to strengthen communication between schools and students. David believes these conversations are essential because they influence how policies and initiatives are developed throughout the district.
Collaboration has also been a key part of David’s experience on the council. He regularly speaks with students at his school and through the organizations he serves in order to gather diverse perspectives and bring those voices to the table. When working alongside district leaders, he emphasizes the importance of being respectful, solution-oriented, and realistic about implementing change.
Through his participation, David has strengthened his communication and leadership skills, particularly in professional settings. He has learned how to clearly express ideas, engage in productive discussions, and work with individuals who hold different perspectives. Most importantly, he has gained a deeper sense of accountability as a representative of the student body.
David believes his work on the council positively impacts both Elsik High School and the broader Alief ISD community. By bringing information, opportunities, and ideas back to his campus while also sharing student concerns with district leadership, he helps strengthen the connection between students and the district. “When students see that their voices are valued, it encourages more engagement and a stronger sense of community across Alief ISD,” he said.
Among his most memorable experiences on the council were the icebreaker activities that brought students together from across the district. Meeting students from different schools and hearing about their experiences helped create a deeper understanding of the challenges and successes students face throughout Alief ISD.
Looking ahead, David hopes the council will continue increasing student engagement and awareness so more students understand that their voices matter. He also wants to see stronger connections between student feedback and visible outcomes, ensuring students can clearly recognize the impact of their contributions.
For students considering applying to the council, David offers simple but meaningful advice: “Go for it and be authentic. The council is not about having all the answers, but about being willing to listen, speak up, and represent others.”
