Alief Alum Spotlight: Monica Paniagua

For Monica Paniagua, Alief ISD is more than a place—it’s home. A native of Corpus Christi, Texas, Monica moved to Alief with her family in 1991, beginning her freshman year at Elsik High School. What started as a new chapter quickly became the foundation for a lifelong connection to a community that would shape her character, career, and purpose.

A proud member of the Mighty Rams Class of 1995, Monica fondly recalls her time at Elsik High School. She was actively involved in the Good Sportsmanship League (GSL), HOSA, and served as the Varsity Girls Soccer Manager. These experiences not only created lasting memories but also instilled in her a deep sense of teamwork, leadership, and service—values she carries with her to this day.

After completing her college education, Monica felt a calling to return to the very community that had given her so much. She began her career in Alief ISD working with the CAPE Program at the Alief Learning Center, eventually serving as Secretary to the Principal. Today, she is in her fifth year with the Federal Programs & Grants department as a Federal Funds Assistant, where she plays a vital role in ensuring campuses follow federal guidelines when utilizing funding. What she enjoys most about her work is the collaboration—working hand in hand with campuses to support student success through responsible and effective use of resources.

Monica credits much of her personal and professional growth to the educators who guided her during her high school years. Influential mentors like Ella Jefferson, Connie Koehn, Cynthia Elizalde, and Jim Dallas left a lasting impression through their dedication and encouragement. Their example continues to inspire Monica’s own commitment to supporting others and fostering success.

Her impact extends far beyond her role. Monica is a passionate advocate for Alief ISD, proudly embracing the spirit of #OneAlief. She actively gives back through volunteer work with the Alief ISD Education Foundation, contributing her time to events like the Annual Golf Tournament, Stuff A Bus, and CIA Market Days. For Monica, service is not just an act—it’s a calling and one of her greatest joys.

Outside of work, Monica finds happiness in traveling and cherishing time with her family, seven Godchildren, and friends. These moments reflect the same values she holds dear in her professional life: connection, care, and community.

When asked about success, Monica shares that it is ever-evolving. Rather than defining it by titles or milestones, she measures success by the person she has become—compassionate, considerate, and deeply connected to others. Among her proudest accomplishments is her 28 years of dedicated service to Alief ISD and the meaningful relationships she has built along the way.

Looking back, Monica recognizes that Alief ISD provided more than an education—it offered exposure to a rich diversity of cultures, experiences, and opportunities. This “melting pot” helped shape her worldview and prepared her to thrive both personally and professionally.

Her message to current students, staff, and alumni is simple yet powerful: “Always stay #AliefProud. Know that you are part of an educational family that has stood strong through the best and worst.”

Monica Paniagua’s story is a testament to the lasting impact of community, the power of service, and the pride of giving back to the place that helped shape who you are.
