Water Testing Information
Alief ISD initiated voluntary water quality testing at Hastings High School in April 2016. This testing was conducted as a proactive, precautionary measure to ensure that our drinking water is safe for students and employees.
In March 2016, a science teacher sample-tested a water source as a classroom project. Testing results came back as within acceptable EPA limits, but at the threshold of those limits. Although the EPA does not require schools to test drinking water, as a precautionary measure, we began to re-test the water source and subsequently received inconsistent results.
Alief ISD receives its water supply from the City of Houston and six Municipal Utility Districts.
In order to troubleshoot and remediate the issue during the summer of 2016, we shut off the water supply to Hastings High School and provided staff members with bottled water while replacing equipment and plumbing.
Working alongside the City of Houston Public Works, we were able to locate a primary source of concern and the City replaced the water meter which supplies water to Hastings High School.
We are pleased to report that final lead testing results for the water sources sample-tested have come back within acceptable standards prior to the 2016-17 school year.
Our next steps in our water testing initiative is to continue water testing at Hastings High School, as well as the remaining Alief ISD campuses and facilities, remediating any results that may fall outside of the acceptable EPA recommendations of .020 for non-water suppliers.
Alief ISD continues to be committed to the safety and well-being of its students and employees. The district’s goal in its water testing initiative is not only to alleviate Alief ISD parents, students and staff concern, but also exceed EPA standards.
WHAT WILL ALIEF ISD BE TESTING?
Alief ISD will test all water fountains and all faucets where water is known to be used for consumption at all campuses and district facilities.
TESTING SCHEDULE
An estimated district-wide Water Testing Schedule has been posted. We are prioritizing buildings which were constructed prior to 1986, when the Safe Drinking Water Act was enacted.
