Eligibility & Entry Requirements

  • The 2019 Alief Idol competition is open to all academically eligible K-12 Alief ISD enrolled students and Alief ISD staff members who wish to showcase their singing talents. Students not enrolled in Alief ISD schools and those not employed with Alief ISD are not eligible for this competition.  This year’s contest will feature three levels of competition: Elementary/Intermediate, Middle/High School, and Staff.  From each level, an Alief Idol will be crowned as well as a second and third place winner. The Alief Idol winner from last school year is not eligible to enter this year's contest.

LOSS OF ELIGIBILITY

  • In the event that a student participant loses eligibility due to poor academic performance, an alternate will be chosen from the pool of eligible contestants.

Deadline

  • The deadline for submission of audition entries is Monday, September 16, 2019.

2019 Timeline

    • Competitors may submit their audition video link online from Thursday, August 22, to Monday, September 16.
    • Semifinalists will be announced on Wednesday, October 9.
    • Competitors advancing to the Semifinal Round will be notified by Wednesday, October 9.
    • The Semifinal Round will be hosted at the Kerr High School Theater on Monday, October 21, 2019, at 6:30 p.m.
    • The Final Round will be hosted at Alief Proud Day Festival – Crump Stadium Parking Lot on Saturday, November 16, 2019.

Semifinal Round

  • The top 6 auditions in the Elementary/Intermediate category, the top 6 auditions in the Middle/High School category, and the top 6 auditions in the Staff category will advance to the Semifinal Round.

    • The Semifinal Round Competition will be held Monday, October 21, 2019, at 6:30 p.m. at the Kerr High School Theater.
    • The top 3 auditions in the Elementary/Intermediate category, the top 3 auditions in the Middle/High School category, and the top 3 auditions in the Staff category will advance to the Final Round.
    • The Final Round will be hosted at Alief Proud Day Festival – Crump Stadium Parking Lot on Saturday, November 16, 2019.

Awards - Semifinal Round

    • All Semifinal round competitors will receive an Alief Idol gift bag (one per entry).

Final Round

  • The top 3 performers in the Elementary/Intermediate category, the top 3 performers in the Middle/High School category, and the top 3 performers in the Staff category, as determined by the judge’s voting in the Semifinal Round, advance to the Final Round.

    The Final Round Competition will be hosted at Alief Proud Day – Crump Stadium Parking Lot on Saturday, November 16, 2019.

Music Selection and Equipment

  • Competitors may perform a song from the genre of their choice.  Rapping may be integrated into the song, however, the competition is a singing competition, and all contestants will be judged on their singing ability. Audition submissions must have accompanying background music.

    • The song selected cannot exceed 3 minutes.
    • Contestants may bring a compact disc, iPod or other MP3 device with background music only, no background vocals.
      • Contestants will be disqualified if musical accompaniment contains vocals.
    • Contestants should be prepared to perform a Capella, in case of any technical difficulties.
    • All song choices must be appropriate for a family-friendly show.
    • Lyrics that are deemed lewd or violent, or that contain profanity, are not permitted.
    • Entries must be a solo performance (no duos or groups will be accepted).
    • Alief Idol reserves the right to end any performance it deems inappropriate and disqualify any contestant who does not comply with the rules.

Attire

  • Competitors may wear the attire of their choice; however, all attire must be appropriate for a family show. Alief Idol reserves the right to cancel the performance of any competitor wearing inappropriate attire.

Performance

  • A great stage performance is often an advantage to a competitor; however, all performances must be appropriate for a family show. Alief Idol reserves the right to cancel the performance of any competitor performing in an excessively suggestive or other inappropriate manner.

Judging

    • Qualified judges will be selected by Alief Idol to judge Semifinal Round and Final Round of the competition.
    • Judges decisions are final.
    • Winning competitors will be announced immediately following the Semifinal and Final Round judging, and winning competitors will be recognized.
    • Results will be published on Alief ISD’s website at www.aliefisd.net.

Awards - Final Round

    • All competitors performing in the Final Round will receive a trophy and an Alief Idol gift bag. Awards will be presented immediately following the Final Round judging.

    • The third prize winner in the Elementary/Intermediate, Middle/High School, and Staff categories will each receive a $100 gift card.

    • The second place winner in the Elementary/Intermediate, Middle/High School, and Staff categories will each receive a $250 gift card.

    • The Alief Idol Singing Competition first place winner in the Elementary/Intermediate, Middle/High School, and Staff categories will each receive:

      • A $500 gift card.

      • Recording time in a professional studio to produce a radio-quality recording that the winner may use to further his/her musical career. The recording must be completed on or before August 31, 2020.

      • An invitation to ride in the 2020 Alief Community Parade and to perform at the 2020 Alief Proud Day Festival.
