Vision Statement

  • Alief provides a balanced mathematics program that develops each student's competency in basic skills as well as the capacity to reason analytically and apply problem-solving skills to new situations.

Balanced Math

  • Core Instruction
Research suggests that when students are engaged in a “balance” of mathematics activities, they can succeed in applying their math skills and reasoning ability to solve real-life problems.  By balance, we mean the deliberate design of instruction and assessment that helps students: build computational skills through daily review, develop conceptual understanding in core instruction, develop mathematical fluency in application of math facts, and use mathematical reasoning in problem solving situations.

    Daily Review
As part of a balanced mathematics program, studens will have an opportunity to practice and apply previously taught concepts.  This simple 15- 20 minute daily review allows for that necessary spiraled practice.  This time is equally split between discussion and computation of the 3-5 problems.  The purpose of the Daily Review is review and practice, NOT instruction.  This is a time to enhance number sense, emphasize and model multiple approaches and foster students’ mathematical reasoning.

    Every Day Counts
As part of a balanced mathematics program, students will have an opportunity to identify key mathematical concepts and vocabulary.  Every Day Counts is a 5-10 minute supplementary program that gives students daily contact with those key concepts. This interaction allows students to generalize those key concepts and use that vocabulary to communicate their understandings.
