Second Language Acquisition
Chambers currently has 544 English Language Learners. Content is taught in English utilizing Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol (SIOP) as a tool to make the content comprehensible following the district Bilingual Framework guidelines. To support teachers in teaching content to English Language Learners, teachers are trained in SIOP. Trainings are focused on improving the writing of the Content and Language Objectives, as well as, incorporating the different language building activities in the classroom. The language building activities are utilized in every content instruction to help improve the academic comprehension. To assess their growth, all English language learners (ELLs) are evaluated annually through IDEA Language Proficiency Tests (IPT) and Texas English Language Proficiency Assessment System (TELPAS).
