  • Dwight Mitchell Dedication Wall in the Gymnasium

Welcome to the Dwight Mitchell Memorial Page

This page is dedicated to the life of Coach Dwight Mitchell.

Dwight E. Mitchell was born in Covington, Kentucky, across the Ohio River from Cincinnati, Ohio. After attending the University of North Texas and graduating from Oklahoma Christian College, Dwight taught and coached for 12 years in Oklahoma City.

In 1989, Dwight came to Olle, where he spent the last 24 years of his career as a history teacher, coach, and mentor at Olle Middle School. His teams won numerous district and tournament titles in boys’ basketball, girls’ basketball, football, volleyball, and tennis.

Although Dwight passed away in 2013, his influence lives on through his former students, many of whom are currently teaching in Alief ISD.

Olle's gymnasium is now named after Coach Dwight Mitchell for his dedicated years of service. Below you will find photos and videos with information about him and his devotion to education.

Please check back for our Annual Dwight Mitchell Memorial Basketball Game.

Mr. Tennison giving the introduction speech of the dedication of the gymnasium

The following is taken from Mr. Tennison's speech and has been edited for this page with his express permission.

"My name is George Tennison, and I would like to welcome you to the Dedication of the Dwight Mitchell Gymnasium at E. A. Olle Middle School. I had the distinct pleasure of working with Dwight for the first 20 years of my teaching career. I might add that without Dwight’s guidance, my teaching career would have been measured in days rather than years.

I am not alone. Most of us are here tonight because Dwight Mitchell was there to guide us—to mentor us—when we needed it the most. He was there to celebrate with us, and he always reminded us to enjoy life. As both a coach and a teacher, he reminded us all what it meant to be a student-athlete.

His generosity was not bound by the walls of this school or the dates of the school year; he was your teacher or co-worker for a limited time, but he never stopped being your friend and mentor.

Tonight, we honor Dwight Mitchell’s contributions to the Olle community by dedicating this gym—the gym where he coached—to his memory. As future generations of Olle Owls compete in this gym, they will always look up and see his name. For those of us in attendance this evening, we have the responsibility to make sure they know what that name stands for. To do that, we must share the lessons he shared with us with every student who steps foot on this court. Hopefully, they will all learn what an honor it is to play in the 'Mitch.'"
