Alief ISD Rolls Out Free COVID-19 Testing
Rapid Testing Offered to Students and Staff
In an effort to help mitigate the spread of COVID-19, Alief ISD is taking part in a statewide program offering rapid tests to staff and students on its campuses and at a centralized district location.
This program uses the BinaxNOW tests, which provide results in 15 minutes and are administered using a nasal swab in the front area of the nostril. The tests have shown accuracy rates of 97-98% for symptomatic individuals.
Students with COVID-19 symptoms and students identified by the district as having been in close contact with a COVID-19 positive person will be offered tests. Testing is voluntary, and students will be required to have parent/guardian consent in order to be tested.
The tests will be administered by Alief ISD nursing staff who have been comprehensively trained on the testing procedure.
“We hope that by adding rapid testing, we are able to offer peace of mind to our students and staff and also a convenient and immediate way for staff and students to know quickly if they are COVID positive. In order to combat this virus, and for the health and safety of the Alief community, it is important that staff and students who have become symptomatic or discover that they have been exposed to a positive person while not on campus, that they NOT come to campus, but rather immediately quarantine and test at our centralized location at Crump Stadium,” said HD Chambers, Alief ISD Superintendent.
Staff and students who develop COVID symptoms while on campus or who are identified as being in close contact with a positive person, will report to the nurses’ office, be assessed and have the opportunity to receive a test on campus. Those who develop symptoms or identified as being in close contact with a positive person while off campus, may go to Crump Stadium to be tested.
The Crump Stadium South Entrance (12321 High Star Dr., Houston, Texas 77072) testing site is currently up and running and testing is available Monday -Friday, 8:00 a.m. -11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. and Saturday: 8:00 a.m. -12:00 p.m.
Testing will roll out to all campuses across the district on January 18, 2021.
“It’s also very important that staff and students continue to complete their daily health screening before coming to school or work. Please answer the screening questions honestly and help protect not only yourself, your family, but also the Alief community,” said Chambers.
