Janine Dykes

I have been teaching sculpture at Kerr for 17 years. I earned my Bachelor of Fine Arts in Visual Art Studies at The University of Texas at Austin, and my Masters of Fine Arts in Sculpture at The University of the Arts in Philadelphia. I am a professional artist and have had my personal artworks shown in exhibitions in galleries in Houston, Austin, Philadelphia, New Orleans, Dallas, Fresno and New York City.

My students experience access to many different sculpture materials and techniques, and have choice over subject matter for project-based learning. My students have opportunities to go on field trips to local art museums with me every year. My visiting artist program allows my students to have hands-on workshops with local visual artists in my classroom. My students participate in art contests every year and continue to win local, state and national awards in the visual arts. I have enjoyed taking students to Carnegie Hall in New York City to receive national medals from Scholastic Art Awards.

High school students benefit from experience and exposure to the visual arts to enhance their abstract, non-linear problem solving skill set.

Michelle Kasmarek

My name is Michelle Kasmarek and I am Kerr’s 2-D Art Teacher. I previously graduated from Kerr High School Class of 2004, and let me just tell you how amazing it feels to come back as an educator!

I attended and subsequently graduated from the University of Houston with a Bachelor of Arts in Art History and a minor in Studio Art. My love for art didn’t begin in college, however. It first started when I picked up a paintbrush at 9 years of age and have been slinging aprons and wearing paint ever since. My favorite art mediums include traditional photography, mixed media, and lino-block printmaking.

At a very young age, I found myself creating art from the heart and therefore I strive to teach with that same enthusiasm and love as well. I love what I do unequivocally and experience extreme satisfaction in doing my best to inspire the artistic freedoms for the future generations of artists to come. Not only are future generations of artists important, but so is the history behind the Art. Sometimes in Art, the greatest source of inspiration comes through the work of past artists who are able to assist and inspire artists anew. I am excited to inspire, challenge, broaden, and importantly be a part of the cultivation of Alief’s greatest Artists, Kerr students! It is impossible to mention all the noteworthy aspects that these four walls that make up Kerr’s art room will expose you to; rest assured great adventure and self-discovery are but glimpses of what is in store for you. Looking forward to being a part of all your creations.
