On the Road to the Boston Marathon
CITGO Petroleum Sponsors Two Alief ISD Teachers’ Ultimate Running Dream
CITGO Petroleum Corp. will sponsor Alief ISD educators Krystle Dunn and Courtney Grass to travel to Boston and participate in the 2019 Boston Marathon. They were chosen from hundreds of applicants across the country, and both will receive entry into the race, airfare, hotel and running gear. Alief ISD was the only school district with two educators chosen for the sponsorship.
The Boston Marathon is the world’s oldest annual marathon and is one of six World Marathon Majors, which include Tokyo, Boston London, Berlin, Chicago and New York City. Every year since its inception, over 30,000 runners brave the hilly terrain for the feat of a lifetime in trying to finish the race.
Krystle Dunn, Elsik Ninth Grade Center biology teacher, ran cross-country in high school and took up running as a hobby when she started teaching seven years ago. She has participated in the Houston marathon for the past three years. Dunn says, “I like running because it’s a stress reliever. I like the goal-setting involved in training for upcoming races. It forces me to be more efficient with my time so that I have enough time to run.”
As a way to connect with her students, this year, she started the Elsik Run Club. Most of the students who signed up for the run club are new to running. She hopes to connect with the cross-country team to create a mentor program within the run club with the goal of running the Houston half-marathon next year.
“I am thrilled that CITGO opened this sponsorship up to teachers. It’s such a great way to say ‘thank you’ to educators,” says Dunn.
In her 19th year as an educator in Alief ISD, Courtney Grass, Best Elementary School Action-Based Learning Facilitator, is also a product of Alief ISD and attended Kennedy Elementary, Holub Middle School and Hastings High School. An avid sportswoman, she played collegiate soccer. She started running as a way to stay in shape and has run in both the Houston and Disney marathons. Currently, she competes as a triathlete and is looking forward to participating in the Boston Marathon and the challenge that it represents.
“I am so grateful to CITGO and their partnership with Alief that is making all of this happen. For them to choose to sponsor two teachers from Alief is amazing,” says Grass.
On Monday, April 15, students across Alief ISD will be rooting for both women as they run in their quest to complete the iconic Boston Marathon. You can track runners in the marathon by downloading the BAA free mobile app, signing up for text alerts, or by using the BAA website, www.baa.org.
