Even though my path to Education was not dictated through a four-year program, in hindsight, it seems only fitting that this would become my career of choice.  As a child, when others were enjoying the unrelenting heat of the sun and the freedom to explore the wondrous outdoors (at least until the street lights came on), my moments were spent providing "quality instruction" to lifeless stuffed mementos or willing relatives.  School was the name of my favorite game in adolescence, and my role was to make sure that my squirming students knew that this game didn't end until they knew everything that I knew.

Life has taught me that persistence is the way to achieve goals, and that apathy is the reason behind many failures.  Before I recognized the potential in being more than just mediocre, various teachers recognized the potential in me.  Instead of allowing me to remain complacent with a B in a course, I would be dared to put forth actual effort and seek an A.  It was these words of encouragement and meaningful relationships, accompanied with the unconditional love of my family, that have led me to be resilient in the face of many of life’s challenges.

After graduating from Louisiana State University in 2007, my choices were either to apply to law school or return to Houston and seek a career.  It only took a short amount of time to realize that education was where I could make the impact that I desired.  In 2003, when I graduated from Hastings High School, it was Alief teachers that I was able to thank for instilling me with the values and determination to go off to college and make something of my life.  Circumstances don’t determine your path, but instead, it is circumstances that define each individual and their desire to be more than a situation.

In August of 2012, I received a Master’s Degree in Counseling from Prairie View A & M University to take my mission even further.  It is my goal as a school counselor to extend my reach campus-wide and make a difference in students’ lives, like many educators and administrators made within my own.  Life may not be a crystal stair, but who is to stop you from creating your own?

My name is Turquisha Lasker and I have been in education for over 10 years, 6th year in Alief ISD. I am a graduate of Prairie View A & M University, with a Bachelor's in Communication Studies, a Master of Arts degree in School Counseling, and a Master of Education in Administration and Supervision from the University of Houston-Victoria.

Being able to assist anyone in anyway possible has always been a passion for me. I am grateful that my profession has afforded me the opportunity to do so everyday. Not only do I assist with academics, but I find great joy in molding our students into becoming productive citizens of society.

Being placed in a position to assist children in this capacity is a privilege and gift. Counseling and educating our children is something that not everyone can do or have the patience to handle. The children are our future and it is the counselor's job to support and mold each one individually. Patience and passion in what I do makes my role in your child's life worth it and that much more enjoyble!

Transition Counselor

Welcome, my name is Sherry Iyamu and I have been working in Alief ISD for over 10 years. I am excited to be returning to O’Donnell Middle School where I began my educational career as a Math Educator and Math Instructional Specialist. I am a graduate of the University of Houston where I received a Bachelor in Science in Interdisciplinary Studies degree and a Master of Education in Counseling degree.

Having the opportunity to guide students in exploring their interests and passions has been one of the many reasons I pursued a career as a school counselor. It is my hope that as a counseling team, we are able to mold each student socially and emotionally so that when they leave us, they are able to choose the post-secondary path that best suits their passion.

As the Transition Counselor here at O’Donnell, I will be assisting students in achieving their academic and post-secondary goals.  Students will have the opportunity to complete career interest inventories and put a plan in place that will help them succeed in high school and beyond. I look forward to the opportunity to work with our students, families, and staff for this upcoming school year.
