Second Language Acquisition
O'Donnell has a very diverse population which includes over 15 languages. In accordance with federal and district guidelines the goal of the ESL program is to help English language learners (ELLs) learn the required grade-level core subjects of reading/language arts, math, science, and social studies. One of our additional goals is to also help ESL students to become proficient in listening, speaking, reading, and writing in English. We offer sheltered classes for newcomers to intermediates levels in reading, writing, history, and science and math. We also provide an instructional aide to support students and ensure that the best instructional practices are implemented in our classrooms daily. A large majority of our teaching staff have been trained on how to effectively use SIOP strategies to improve student success and achievement. Additionally, our students have access to the latest technology and computer software programs to improve academic success. In compliance with federal guidelines the LPAC Committee meets monthly to make instructional decisions regarding placement, so that students who show mastery are moved to the next instructional level when they are ready and not just at the end of the school year.
