January 2010 Scholar Athletes

Elsik High School senior Sharmeke Shaw has been named Alief ISD’s Girl Scholar Athlete of the Month. She is a three year varsity Cross Country and Track team member, and a four year Basketball player. She is maintaining a 3.43 GPA, received a “4” on ELA writing and “commended” scores on three sections of TAKS.
Sharmeke is known as “Little Bit” and her coach, LaShawn Johnson said, “She might be little, but she works hard and shows a big positive attitude and strong leadership skills in everything she does.” Sharmeke is a member of LEO (Leadership, Experience, Opportunity), and the Senior Class Committee. She has also been a Girl Scout for 12 years and volunteers at Westwood Assisted Living. Sharmeke plans to attend University of Texas at Dallas next fall.
Hastings High School senior Jimmy Dinh has been named Alief ISD’s Boy Scholar Athlete of the Month. He is a varsity letterman on the Hastings Basketball team and is maintaining a 3.61 GPA.
Coach Darrell Collins said, “Jimmy is an outstanding young man. He is dedicated to the Hastings Basketball team and to his studies. I believe he will succeed at whatever he sets out to accomplish in life.” Jimmy is active in Student Council, PALS, and is a volunteer for Special Olympics. He looks forward to attending college in the fall and will continue to stay involved in athletics and volunteering.

High school students around the country signed scholarship agreements with universities on Wed., Feb. 3. Alief ISD Football players, often with their coaches and family members, are photographed during signing ceremonies. Some coaches, including the University of Texas' Mack Brown, make time to meet up with their future players. Brown visited Taylor H.S. senior De’Arius Cotton and his mother, and even spoke with staff members from the school.
