Welcome to the 2015-2016 school year- We are extremely excited to continue implementing S.T.E.M. (Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics) with the Universal Design for Learning (UDL) framework and practices in Secondary Science in Alief ISD!  We are now a Texas STEM designated district. Many great new experiences for students are in the horizon for this school year and we have partnered with companies such as Chevron which has sponsored the JASON Project ( for grades 3-12.  The JASON Project is an interactive curricula that was started by Dr. Bob Ballardthe scientist who discovered the Titanic!  The project exposes students to real scientists, inquiry experiences that occur in scientific career fields, and an amazing amount of connections to current events in our world.  Donations from Shell have been invaluable in helping our program to flourish with inquiry labs resources (POGIL)!  Citgo has purchased science a Mobile Science Lab Bus and supplies for the van including laptops, digital cameras, and key lab supplies needed by our campuses, etc.

It is the year of tremendous possibilities as we continually forge our way through the relatively new assessment system in Texas- State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness or (STAAR™).  Our motto is "Success is Our Only Option!" Our core foundation this year is building student mastery through exemplary science instruction and student learning!  We will be focusing on increasing the amount of time our students talk about science in the classroom and fostering an environment where our students make their thinking visible using Thinking Maps.  We are  also designing our lessons to be centered around scientific literacy by using the CER (Claims, Evidence, Reasoning) framework to insure that students are writing across curriculum.

We strongly believe in our teachers' and our students' success every day in every way in Alief ISD!  We have the absolutely best teachers in the nation!  We are setting the standard for great STEM instruction and learning in science!

Yours in Science,
Dr. Karen D. Jacobs, Denia Puerto, and the Secondary Science Leadership Team
